Artemin is a member of the Glia Cell-Derived Neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family ligands that includes GDNF, Neurturin, Persephin, and Artemin. Biologically active Artemin is a dimer consisting of two identical disulfide linked monomers that each contain a cysteine-knot structure. Mature mouse Artemin shares 88.5% amino acid sequence homology with human Artemin. Artemin mediates signaling via a multicomponent receptor composed of RET (receptor tyrosine kinase) and one of the four GFRα (α1‐α4) receptors with the preferred receptor being GFRα3‐RET. Artemin supports the survival of sensory and sympathetic peripheral neurons and also supports survival of dopaminergic midbrain neurons. Recombinant Mouse Artemin is homodimer of two 113 amino acid subunits with a calculated molecular weight of 24.2 kDa.
