Description

Monensin is a protein transport inhibitor that can be added to cell culture medium during in vitro activation of cells to inhibit the secretion of cytokines elicited by stimulation. Addition of Monensin leads to an accumulation of newly synthesized protein in the endoplasmic reticulum. The use of Monensin effectively enhances the detection of most mouse and human intracellular cytokines however, other protein transport inhibitors such as Brefeldin A can also be used. It is recommended that investigators evaluate the optimal reagent to use for their specific assay system.
